The Saints enjoyed a gorgeous day as they took practice outside. “Get going so much inside, and it’s a little harder on your legs with the indoor surface. We had good weather, talked about it yesterday and today. We just wanted to come out one of these two days,” said Saints head coach Sean Payton on the decision to practice under the sun. Payton again shortened practice Thursday by about a half hour.

The team also worked out veteran defensive linemen Paul Spicer and Rodrique Wright this week. Spicer spent the offseason with the Saints and Wright spent three seasons with the Dolphins. With defensive tackles Sedrick Ellis and Kendrick Clancy injured, the Saints are thin at the position.

EAGERNESS LED TO POOR TACKLING

Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams Thursday said that after viewing the game film from the Falcons win, wanting to make Sportscenter might have led to a few of the big Atlanta runs. “When you get into a game like that, when you play a Monday night game, which is our first kind of national big time game, is that all day long they’re pretty fired up, and you kind of got to go through the emotions of playing too hard, playing too fast, and you got to do a better job of just squeezing,” said Williams Thursday. “A large part of some of those things were guys that were super excited trying to make a blow up hit as opposed to trying to making a solid tackle and letting the rest of us swarm, and then trying to take the ball away.”

Williams isn’t upset by the over aggressiveness of his defense, telling the media a story where former Saints practice squad member Danny Gorrer, who was signed by St. Louis recently, was told he practice to fast. Williams gave the former Saint some advice, “It was nice to hear him say ‘coach I shocked them out there because of how we practiced. They thought I practiced too fast.’ I said impossible. It’s impossible to practice to fast Danny. Listen to me Danny, they’re trying to get you cut.”
