Saints defense not to be overlooked on Sunday

Sunday’s matchup between the Saints and Jets in the Superdome, is mostly being billed as the Jet’s defense versus the Saints offense. The Saints however are coming off of one their most impressive defensive efforts in recent memory.

“Our game is going to talk for itself. We definitely can see that sometimes it can be our offense against their defense, and that our offense can take the spotlight. We don’t really look at that on the defensive side of the ball,” says Saints cornerback Tracy Porter. “We’re looking at what we’re going to do on Sunday. Create turnovers, create a short field for our offense and let them light up the scoreboard.”

Buffalo was held to zero trips inside the Saints red zone, and picked up zero first downs in their final five possessions, and let’s not forget not putting up a point against the Saints defense in the game.

Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams seems to enjoy all of the defensive talk this week leading up to the game. “Is that right, daggone it, daggone it,” was how Williams responded when told the Jets were the top blitzing team in the NFL, his Saints defense was third.

William’s job this Sunday will be to rattle Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez who at least thus far, has been unflappable in wins over the Texans, Patriots and Titans. Sanchez in fact become the league’s first rookie quarterback to win his first three starts. He was also named the NFL Rookie of the Month.

A Sanchez has been successful is the men up front whose job it is to protect him. “Very, very well coached offensive line,” says Williams, “They’re keeping their young quarterback upright and their keeping their young quarterback confident.”

The Jets offensive line has four first round draft picks in left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson, left guard Alan Faneca, center Nick Mangold, and right tackle Damien Woody.

Another reason getting under Sanchez’s skin won’t be an easy task “The biggest thing is I put it on number nine, put it on number nine. Number nine scores points then it goes on their quarterback,” says Williams of how the Saints offense and in particular Drew Brees can help his defense. “The burden goes on the quarterback when he has to open the formations up and all of a sudden have to play from behind.” The Jets have enjoyed playing with the lead so far this season

Williams also gives kudos to the Jet’s coaching staff in putting Sanchez in a position to succeed. “I think Rex has done a great job in managing the game and they’ve managed the game so that the quarterback doesn’t get hit, because they’re ahead,” says Williams. “The best way to open it up and get more hits on their quarterback is for our quarterback to shine and get out and get a lead and give us a chance to go after him.”
