Saints get ready to head to Oakland

The Saints wrapped their week of practice indoors on Thursday as they went through plays and situations they’ll likely use for Saturday game against the Raiders.

THOMAS WINS PUNTER JOB

Fifth round draft pick Thomas Morstead has won the punters job, out performing Glenn Pakulak who was cut late Wednesday. “I think for us it was pretty obvious,” said Saints head coach Sean Payton of the competition between the two kickers. “If he (Thomas) misses a punt we’re still getting a hang time above four-oh. I think he’s done a good job early on especially of being consistent. There is certainly going to be some bumps along the road, but we like what we have in that player, a lot.”

NO GOZ FOR OAKLAND

The following players will be held out of Saturday third preseason game in Oakland.

DE Charles Grant, G/T Anthony Davis, TE Darnell Dinkins, RB Pierre Thomas, S Chip Vaughn and WR D’Juan Woods.

S Darren Shaper and RB Reggie Bush will be game day decisions as to whether or not they’ll play. “We’ll see how they’re doing pregame, make a decision with those two before the game,” said Payton.

BUMPS AND BRUISES

RB Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush did not practice. Neither back has practiced all week. Bush has yet to play in the preseason as he deals with recovering from offseason knee surgery and now a strained calf.

Mike Bell, who had a pair of very nice TD runs in goal line work on Thursday, will get the bulk of the early carries and be relieved by Lynell Hamilton Saturday.
